Calif. district promotes fruits and veggies by offering incentives

In an effort to encourage students to make healthy food choices, Turlock Unified School District is using prizes as an incentive, reports the Turlock Journal.

For the second consecutive year, the California-based school district has partnered with the Stanislaus County Fair for the 20/20 Fruit and Veggie Contest. During the 20-day contest—which started April 4—students are given a punch card that is marked every time they choose a fruit or a vegetable at lunch.

Once a card is completed, they are entered into a grand prize drawing. Four students from each school in the district can win a bicycle or a family four-pack of tickets to the county fair, among other prizes, according to the Journal.

“It is a great program that was very successful last year, which is why we wanted to partner again with the Stanislaus County Fair to promote healthy eating habits to young students,” Scott Soiseth, the district’s director of child nutrition, told the Journal.
