For school nutrition teams, universal free meals pack some surprises

From dramatic jumps in participation to fewer free and reduced applications, K-12 operators in California and Maine share what they encountered during their first year of serving free meals for all.

Also in this week’s K-12 legislative update: Arizona senators hope to ban lunch shaming, and Illinois becomes the latest state to offer universal free meals.

The nutrition director at Montague Area Public Schools and a nearby culinary teacher have joined forces to help culinary students create their own dishes and market them to their peers.
