Management firm cancels contract with Massachusetts hospital

Decision by Morrison Healthcare will cost 82 employees their jobs next month.

WORCESTER, Mass. — The company operating the cafeteria at St. Vincent Hospital will be replaced next year, according to the hospital, and 82 food service workers will be laid off.

Atlanta-based Morrison Healthcare has notified the state that it will cease operations at St. Vincent Hospital and lay off its entire cafeteria staff at the hospital on Jan. 26, 2015.

Affected Morrison Healthcare employees include 36 catering associates, 11 cooks, 10 shift supervisors, nine dietitians, four dishwashers, four cold-food preparers, three cashiers and three managers, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the state in September.

A spokesman for Morrison confirmed that the company's contract with St. Vincent would end Jan. 26. Morrison has been the hospital's cafeteria vendor for more than 10 years, the spokesman said.
