District reduces absences with breakfast in the classroom

Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas, is seeing fewer absences due to breakfast in the classroom, KXAN reports.

The district has expanded breakfast in the classroom from eight to 25 schools this year, and the schools offering the program are seeing fewer tardies, absences, nurse visits and classroom interruptions, Food Services Director Anneliese Tanner told KXAN.

Most of the meals are paid for with federal dollars. School districts in Texas are now able to apply for a private $7.5 million grant to go toward future breakfast programs.
