Congress’ failure to reauthorize school lunches: Why FSDs care

Although a change in the status quo hadn’t been expected in recent weeks, school foodservice managers had reasons to hope for a surprise. Here are three major ones.

Through the Farm to School program, $350,000 in grants is now available for projects that help schools serve locally grown foods on lunch menus.

UVM Medical Center’s Atrium Garden will also serve as a patient and family waiting space and a lending library for cookbooks and gardening guides.

The newly seated directors and certifying-board members will serve into 2016.

A study led by Texas A&M found school meals paired with popular vegetables are less likely to end up in the garbage.

The K-12 dining services company announced the hire Tuesday, noting Dodd’s strategic planning and brand development experience.

With the expiration of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act less than three weeks away, School Nutrition Association President Jean Ronnei sent a letter to key members of congress Monday, stressing the association’s desires for more funding and flexibility for school-meal programs.

A recent study found that children in schools with shorter lunch periods tend to eat less and throw away more food.

Funds will go toward training programs that help school districts meet the new professional standards for cafeteria staff, as well as state programs that provide nutrition education, child care and summer meals.

The state’s Department of Human Services is requesting help from Tennesseans in fighting child hunger.

With some Beltway watchers fearing lawmakers won’t get to reauthorization before funding for school lunches expires this month, the School Nutrition Association re-emphasized the importance of acting, particularly on reimbursements and flexibility.
