The University of California has shared its plan for eliminating single-use plastics on its campuses by 2023.

The university is starting with phasing out plastic bags in retail and foodservice locations on campus by the beginning of 2021. Later in the year, single-use straws, utensils and stirrers will also be removed and replaced with either compostable or reusable alternatives.

By July of 2022, the university hopes to offer reusable plates, cups and clamshell containers at dine-in eateries. To-go facilities will also provide reusable or locally compostable alternatives.

Single-use plastic bottles will be the last to go under the plan. Campus food service operations are planning to phase them out by the start of 2023.
