Sterling College has been awarded a Special Achievement Award in Food for its sustainability efforts, as part of Sierra magazine’s annual “Cool Schools” ranking for 2015, which evaluates universities’ sustainability initiatives.
The list ranked Sterling No. 2 of 153 institutions for sustainable food. The college grows 20 percent of its own food on campus and has one of the country’s first collegiate sustainable-agriculture programs.
“Our entire community is invested in making sure our food system is a model for what we want to see in the world, a beta test,” said the university’s Executive Chef Simeon Bittman in a statement. “We use our campus as a living laboratory to grow our own food, to demonstrate how to radically reduce food waste, and to create a food system that doesn’t exacerbate climate change.”
Sterling College has also recently been named one of BestColleges.com’s “Greenest Colleges and Universities.”
