District builds new cafeterias thanks to sales tax

SPRINGFIELD, Fla. — Two Bay County schools built in the ’50s have new cafeterias.

Springfield Elementary School held a grand reopening of their cafeteria Wednesday afternoon, while Hiland Park Elementary School is reopening Thursday. Both cafeterias have been funded with revenue from the half-cent sales tax, which voters approved in 2010.

Springfield Principal Harriet Taylor said the reopening was a great day and a dream of hers. The renovation took two years and was completed in February.

“We had outgrown the other cafeteria,” Taylor said. “With this cafeteria, we can have all of our parents and students in here at the same time.”

Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students and their teachers gathered into the cafeteria for the reopening and applauded when Taylor spoke. Taylor said she ate in the old cafeteria, so she appreciates the new cafeteria, which is located toward the back of the school campus. The construction includes a stage, lighting, curtains, sound system, video system, acoustical treatments and all new kitchen equipment.
