By student demand, district ups vegetarian, global options

Syracuse City School District in Syracuse, N.Y., will add weekly vegetarian and international-themed lunch days starting this fall, syracuse.com reports.

The menu changes developed out of students’ requests for the cafeteria to offer more vegetarian and ethnic options. Students in the Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse's Youth Council were responsible for creating and submitting the proposal for the change.

Power Up Tuesdays will feature vegetarian-focused cuisine such as salad bars, while International Thursdays will highlight ethnic foods centered on the diverse background of the student body.

Along with soliciting feedback from elementary school students on the changes, the district will set up a committee of high schoolers next year to garner feedback on the meals.
