Held the first full week in March, National School Breakfast Week puts a spotlight on school breakfast programs and the importance of the morning meal, with districts debuting special menu items, contests and themed dishes throughout the week. Here are four ways districts across the country are celebrating.
1. Racer trading cards
Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School District in Wilton, N.H., has created its own breakfast race car driver trading cards for students to collect. The cards feature graphics created by the School Nutrition Association and fit the week’s “Start your engines with school breakfast” theme. Throughout the week, students can try menu items inspired by mini race cars, such as mini waffles and a mini scrambler. Parents are also invited to join their children for breakfast.
At the middle and high school level, students will be able to enjoy a build-your-own-yogurt bar and a breakfast waffle sandwich.
2. Breakfast for lunch
North East Independent School District in San Antonio partnered with the Texas Department of Agriculture to host a video game-inspired week encouraging students to “Level up with a healthy school breakfast.” The celebration will include special breakfast offerings such as cinnamon dunkers with a scratch-made glaze and bean and cheese tacos with housemade refried beans. Students will also be served breakfast for lunch one day.
3. Breakfast contests
Along with the chance to win daily prizes during National School Breakfast Week, students at Broward County Public Schools in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., can participate in a coloring contest based on the theme “Start your engines.” One elementary student and one middle schooler will win a family membership pass to a local museum with IMAX movie passes.
High school students will also be encouraged to post about the week on social media using the hashtags #NSBW19 and #PowerUp. Those who participate will be entered to win a jersey from an NFL team of their choice.
4. Smoothie tutorial
Students at Philadelphia Public Schools will be able to start their days off with an array of breakfast options, including chicken biscuit sandwiches, whole-grain cinnamon rolls and blueberry banana smoothies. In anticipation of the week, the foodservice team has released a YouTube video showing how to make its blueberry banana smoothie.
