Bost Seeks Lunch Improvement

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Agriculture Under Secretary Eric Bost says that he may ask Congress to require that school vending machines include milk and flavored water in addition to soda. He also says he would seek additional monies for the program by weeding out students found to be ineligible for free or subsidized meals.

This is one way to find more funding, as the Bush Administration is not expected to ask for additional financing for school meal programs. Advocacy groups, on the other hand, are asking Congress to add $1 billion to the school meals budget, to help with introduction of healthier options, such as freshly prepared produce.
