The K-12 age group has grown up on smoothies, enjoying them both at home and at smoothie bars. To promote smoothies as part of a healthy lifestyle, Houston ISD installed blender bikes on its premises. Kids have to work for their smoothies, pedaling to activate the blenders and whirl the ingredients. The district’s kitchens prep a variety of nutritious fruits and vegetables to blend. A favorite combo includes bananas, frozen blueberries and strawberries, and a handful of spinach, blended together with vanilla yogurt, orange juice and milk.
