District keeps meal prices low to boost sales

Despite six-figure loss, officials decide to keep a price decrease on school meals.

Aug. 19—School district representatives chose to retain lower lunch prices come September despite a streak of annual six-figure losses.

Late last month, the Board of Education authorized the retention of its 2012-13 school lunch prices. Those prices, which were reduced by 25 cents at the middle and six elementary schools and 50 cents at the high school from the 2011-12 school year to achieve a maximum lunch price of $2.75, were initially implemented to account for smaller meal sizes ushered in by federal mandates that had districts abandoning the National School Lunch Program.

However, when those edicts were reversed, district officials chose to retain the lower prices in an effort to make the standard meals a better value and, therefore, a more enticing option, according to Board President David Richards.
