‘Financial peril’ could await school nutrition programs as the extension of pandemic-related waivers looks unlikely

Funding to extend the waivers was not included in the Omnibus spending bill being voted on by Congress.

If made law, schools would be reimbursed 59.5 cents per meal.

The state would reimburse schools for meals served to students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals and create a farm-to-school grant program.

The bills would expand the number of students eligible for free meals and set up a public education campaign about school meals in the state.

The emergency requirement was technically reduced to a proposed rule, meaning it still could be adopted, but only through the usual prolonged process.

LB 758 would expand the state’s Farm-to-School Program Act.

The bill identifies such water sources as any used for drinking, food preparation or cooking.

Schools would no longer be allowed to "publicly identify or stigmatize" students if they are unable to pay for meals.

The matter isn't settled because of pending deliberations at the circuit-court level, but the nation's highest court said it anticipates the requirement to be shot down.
