NYC Public Schools to expand Meatless Mondays

The program will be coming to all 1,800 schools in the district starting next year.

The nutrition team sources the interns through the district’s student internship program, which pays students to work during part of the class day.

Participating restaurants will donate portions of their proceeds on special "spirit nights."

At the end of the study, around 12% of the students who ate breakfast in the classroom had a BMI in the obesity range, compared to 4% of students who ate breakfast in the cafeteria.

School officials say they served 900 halal lunches on the first day.

The revised bill aims to help diminish the amount of meal debt in school districts while still avoiding student lunch shaming.

Under the bill, schools would be reimbursed up to 15 cents per meal to help them purchase certified-organic food grown in California.

While it supports the idea behind it, the Maine School Nutrition Association opposes the bill due to concerns of lunch debt increasing throughout the state.

The chefs will host a cafeteria-inspired meal at one of their restaurants later this month.
