A bill has been introduced in California that is aimed at serving more local, organic food in school meals, the Daily Democrat reports.
Assembly Bill 958 would set up an organic-to-school program within the state’s Office of Farm to Fork. Through the program, schools would be able to apply for grants that would reimburse them up to 15 cents per meal to help them purchase certified-organic food grown in California.
Schools that have a large percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-priced meals and are located near agriculture production would be given preference to receive the funding.
California recently introduced another bill that would offer additional reimbursement to schools that offer vegan options.
