UW-La Crosse says goodbye to plastic straws

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is aiming to get rid of plastic straws at campus eateries this fall, Wisconsin Public Radio reports

The school informed staff and faculty members of the switch in a newsletter last week.

Reusable straws will replace plastic ones; however, plastic versions will be on hand if requested by customers, Director of University Centers Larry Ringgenberg told the media outlet.

Students may decide to vote via referendum this fall on whether plastic straws should be wholly banned from campus.

UW-La Crosse joins a growing number of colleges that have ditched plastic straws for sustainability reasons. Others include Marquette University, Dartmouth College and Duke University.
