School district considers dropping federal lunch program

After learning schools would have to raise lunch prices for a second time to meet federal guidelines, Idaho’s Madison School District said it may drop out of the National School Lunch Program. It is believed to be the first district in the state to do so.

The school reversed its decision to remove a branded hummus from the cafeteria. A group of students had demanded the product be dropped because of allegations the supplier had connections to the Israeli army.

Following Sodexo’s departure, Chartwells will provide meals for the South Carolina school district, which said the new company offers a lot of marketing ideas to encourage healthy eating among students.

A Denver elementary school received grant money to help remodel its cafeteria to include a recycling and composting station, and to provide enhanced nutrition education.
