University student group petitions for cage-free eggs

Students at the University of Georgia are pressuring the school to join the growing movement to use only eggs from hens raised outside of cages.

Student members of the school’s Speak Out for Species animal-rights organization, have gathered 1,500 signatures on a petition mandating that campus dining services start using cage-free eggs, according to red&black.com.

UGA has refused for two years to change its procurement policies, citing the costs, the website reports. 

“After two meetings, we were told the same thing repeatedly—a commitment wasn’t possible,” Namita Money, a member of Speak Out for Species, said.
