Spending $17K on custom chef’s table ‘a mistake’: University

Students at the University of New Hampshire have been taking to social media to voice their frustration over news that the university spent $17,570 on a light-up chef’s table set up in a recently renovated dining hall.

The Durham, N.H., university debuted the 16-seat LED table a few weeks ago in its Holloway Commons cafeteria, which reopened in January after the completion of a $10.5 million renovation, Boston.com reports.

“Purchasing a custom-made chef’s table for the recently renovated Holloway Commons costing thousands of dollars should not have happened,” UNH spokeswoman Erika Mantz told Boston.com. “Steps have been taken to ensure it is a mistake that won’t be repeated.”

The university’s director of dining operations earlier told the student newspaper that the table’s price tag included the cost of shipping it from a Chicago workshop.
