School district targets prom tickets, report cards to curb lunch debt

Students at Waynesboro Area School District in Waynesboro, Pa., may be unable to buy tickets to prom, receive paper report cards or get a copy of their diploma if they have an unpaid lunch balance this upcoming school year, Herald-Mail Media reports.

The new restrictions are being put in place to reduce the district’s meal debt. School officials say the district ended last school year with more than $6,700 in unpaid meals. Almost 49% of the district’s students receive free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches.

The district has previously placed the same restrictions on students with unpaid library costs or lost books or calculators, as well as those with outstanding costs for damaged school property.
