Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has announced his proposed 2023-25 state budget, which includes funding to offer free meals to students who qualify for reduced-price lunches, Urban Milwaukee reports.
The budget would dedicate around $2 billion to cover the meals and other school programming.
As school nutrition programs return to charging students for meals, many states have taken it upon themselves to continue providing free meals to kids.
Massachusetts and Vermont have included funding in their state budgets to provide free meals to students for another school year and, similar to Wisconsin's proposal, North Carolina and Virginia recently passed budgets that allow students who qualify for reduced-price meals to continue receiving free school meals.
