Northeastern University dining staff threaten strike

Dining hall employees at Northeastern University in Boston are threatening to go on strike if their requests for a higher annual income and affordable healthcare are not met, Boston Magazine reports.

The employees are asking for a $35,000 wage as well as affordable health benefits. Last year, the school’s average dining hall employee made $22,000, according to Unite Here, the union representing the workers. Negotiations with Chartwells, Northeastern’s foodservice provider, have been ongoing since April.

The unionized employees will vote Wednesday on whether or not to strike early next month.

Along with Northeastern, Unite Here also represents employees at 11 other schools in the area, including Harvard University, whose dining workers went on strike last year.
