Durango High School in Durango, Colo., has opened a deli in an effort to keep students from eating off campus, The Durango Herald reports.
“As students age through the school system, their participation is less and less in our meal program—even if they need it—because of a perceived stigma of eating in the cafeteria,” Durango School District spokesperson Julie Popp said, noting that the deli provides an attractive alternative.
The deli is located on a separate floor from the cafeteria and serves both breakfast and lunch. Items generally cost $1 to $2 less than what students would pay off campus.
The school hopes to draw more attention to the deli through a social media campaign spearheaded by students. If the deli is successful, the district plans to open a second location on the other side of the campus.
