The government has eliminated pork from federal prison menus, reports the New York Daily News.
The ban of all pig products including ham, bacon and pork chops went into effect Oct. 1 and impacts more than 200,000 inmates.
According to the Bureau of Prisons, which is responsible for running 122 penitentiaries, the decision was made due to cost and prisoner preference, not religious beliefs, says the Daily News.
BOP spokesman Edmond Ross told The Washington Post, “Why keep pushing food that people don’t want to eat? Pork has been the lowest-rated food by inmates for several years.”
