District’s chocolate benefit raises $34K for backpack program

The benefit raised enough money to fund half of the program’s annual budget.

Sanford School Department in Sanford, Maine, hosted a chocolate benefit to sponsor its weekend backpack program, Seacoast Online reports.

Now in its sixth year, the chocolate benefit raised $34,000, which is enough to fund half of the program’s annual budget. Attendees could sample chocolate from local chocolatiers and participate in a raffle and a silent auction. More than 350 guests attended.

The district’s backpack program started several years ago and allows students whose families are struggling financially to receive backpacks full of food to take with them over the weekend.
