Senate workers strike, call on presidential hopefuls for help

The national stir over hourly wages continued Tuesday as dozens of striking Senate foodservice staff called for higher wages and the right to unionize, reports rollcall.com.

Those striking also wanted to call attention to retaliatory actions they say their employer, foodservice vendor Restaurant Associates, has taken against workers who want to unionize.

Event organizers say the event was coordinated to take place the day of the Republican primary debate intentionally, to call out Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-FL).

“Senator Rubio promises to create good jobs for America, but he hasn’t helped the low-wage workers who serve him every day. He likes the fancy dishes we prepare, but he doesn’t care that we can’t afford to feed ourselves,” said James Powell, a chef at the members’ dining room, in a news release.

A spokesman for Senator Cruz told the website that Cruz had not conversed with anyone about the issue. Rollcall.com reports that a spokesman for Senator Rubio did not respond to a request for comment.
