Since Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools opted out of the National School Lunch Program last school year, it’s experienced a boost in school-lunch participation with students at all of its schools, reports swnewsmedia.com.
Officials say revenue has increased nearly $333,000 since the prior year after a number of changes, including implementing “garden bars,” digital menu boards and a menu app for smartphones, as well as build-your-own meal options such as a weekly taco bar.
The district also started using locally sourced meat and dairy products, added more from-scratch cooking and rolled out breakfast carts, Child Nutrition Director Janeen Peterson told the website.
“We will continue to focus on the breakfast area,” Peterson said. “We feel we have a lot of opportunity to get more kids eating with us.”
