Elementary students help implement sugarcane lunch trays

In an attempt to rid garbage bins of Styrofoam trays, students at Heritage Elementary School found a natural alternative.

Seven students at the Alabama school came up with the idea of using sugarcane trays, which they say are more environmentally safe and affordable, while participating in—and ultimately winning—the state’s FIRST LEGO League Championship, a robotics research program for 4th through 8th graders, reports madisoncountyrecord.com.

Heritage has since tested the use of the sugarcane trays in its lunchroom, receiving positive feedback, and is making efforts to use the trays permanently, the website says.
