Campus eatery adopts kiosk ordering

The State University of New York at Albany is switching to a made-to-order format at one of its eateries on campus, and will lean on kiosks to facilitate the ordering process, Albany Student Press reports.

Starting this month, students visiting Food on Demand at the Alumni Quad dining room will place their orders at kiosks and pick up their made-to-order meal at a nearby counter. Previously, students served themselves from a buffet-style line.

Officials at the Albany, N.Y., university hope that the new system will reduce waste while increasing food quality and drawing in more students.

To ensure a smooth transition for employees, Food on Demand will initially still offer the buffet setup while offering some menu items made to order. Eventually, officials hope to transform the buffet line into a coffee shop and bakery.
