Connecticut lawmakers pass bill to fund universal free meals through the current school year

The bill includes $60 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act to provide the meals until the end of June. Governor Ned Lamont is expected to sign it into law. 

The budget earmarks $160 million to offer free breakfast and lunch to all public school students.

SB 348 would restrict added sugar in school meals to no more than 25 grams per day.

The Protecting School Milk Choices Act would require school nutrition programs to offer at least one flavored milk option daily.

The public will be able to comment on the department's proposed updates starting next week.

The budget allots $65 million to offer universal free meals in the state for the remainder of the current school year.

More than 15% of children with food allergies have an allergic reaction while at school, according to the USDA.

The bill failed to pass the House Pre-K-12 Education Subcommittee last week.

A new bill would require schools in the state to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.
