Virginia schools say healthy food requirements thwart fund raising efforts

Clubs at Virginia high schools say they are limited in what they can sell during fundraisers as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.

For the first time, beer and wine were available to purchase at the club level of Razorback Stadium. Sodexo, which holds the stadium concessions, saw net sales of $234,918.

When students at St. Anne School in Laguna Niguel, Calif., went to lunch on Feb. 2, they were able see their new two-story cafeteria for the first time.

School officials in Tennessee are exploring the cost and effectiveness of privatizing the district’s food service with a cafeteria management company. The business would likely oversee staffing, equipping and operating.

The website allows parents access to menus, nutritional information, free and reduced lunch applications, and online payments.

A cafeteria manager is accused of cooking the books to get more money. The district says the manager was able to get more than $23,000 in extra federal funding.

Foodservice workers say Chartwells added an extra half hour to their schedule, increased healthcare costs and cut access to old email accounts.

Unidine Corporation has completed its acquisition of Boston-based FAME Food Management, Inc. The purchase price was not disclosed.
