Lawmakers in South Dakota have deferred a universal free meals bill to the 41st legislative day, effectively killing it.
HB 1221 would have provided free school breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge.
A universal free meals bill introduced in Virginia also recently failed to pass.
Several states are considering universal free meals bills this legislative session, including Rhode Island, Hawaii, Washington and Minnesota.
