A local senior living community has broken ground on a $30-million expansion.
Beacon Hill at Eastgate said it hosted a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday in Grand Rapids, at 1919 Boston St. SE.
The expansion will create 130,000 square feet of space for 56 independent living apartments, which will be one- and two-bedroom units and a deluxe two-bedroom model.
About 49 of the planned residences have been sold.
The community will convert its Mary and Martha Health Care Center semi-private suites into private residences and another 15,000 square feet will be devoted for 15 new private suites that can be used for short-term therapy guests.
The expansion will also feature about 10,000 square feet of expanded space for the enlargement of Beacon Hill at Eastgate’s dining room and a new dining option, the Garden Café.
The café will seat about 40 and offer “garden-fresh dishes” from Timothy England, the community’s award-winning executive chef.
