School cafeterias open, even if the schools don’t

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. — For the tenth day, Sullivan County schools are out, and it means more than missed classes. There are more than 10-thousand students in the Sullivan County school system, many who rely on the breakfast and lunch at school. So before the weekend, the school system wanted to whip up a solution.

After days of silence, Emmett Elementary is opening its doors. Here and at Sullivan North, Sullivan County Schools provided breakfast and lunch for any and all students.

"I came here to eat and came here to have fun with my mamaw," said student Shyann Carrier. And another student, Caleb Woods said he likes the school lunches.

"Yeah, it's very good!" he said. "Especially pizza."

More than 100 people volunteered to help. Sullivan County Schools Supervisor of Operations Evelyn Rafalowski said they wanted to be there for the kids and their families.

"We started having the conversation Wednesday about being able to feed our children," she said.  She says buying the extra food can be difficult, particularly when many are missing work to care for their kids.
