Measure may grant free meals to UC-Boulder foodservice workers

Resolution estimates it would cost $95,000 a year to change the fiscal rule to allow employees to have a free meal.

July 19—At the University of Colorad, Boulder, there are plans to introduce a measure that would allow Boulder campus dining workers to eat a free shift meal from the cafeterias.

Currently, the employees are required to pay $1.72 a day, which can amount to more than $400 a year, regardless of whether they eat food from CU's dining halls or bring meals from home. Under a fiscal rule, the amount is automatically deducted from their paychecks.

"To me, it's an issue of fairness," said Regent Joe Neguse, D-Boulder. "These are individuals who work very, very hard serving the university and our students. We should be rewarding them for their work. As the state's fourth-largest employer, it's incumbent upon us to take care of our workers."
