Farm-to-school program goes live

You've heard of “farm to table” phrase and now there’s a new term called “farm to school.”

“What we try to do is encourage school food purchasers to buy Rhode Island grown produce to serve to kids in schools,” said Kim Clark of Farm Fresh Rhode Island.

Farm Fresh’s new program is called “Harvest of the Month,” and the goal is to gear up to get even more locally-grown vegetables into state schools this year.

In addition to getting more fruits and vegetables into the schools there will also be more signs posted in schools as well so students can learn where their food is coming from and what nutritional value they deliver.

“For September we'll be doing cucumbers and tomatoes,” Clark said.  “So cafeterias will get posters and k-12 cafeterias will get stickers for the kids and in exchange for us giving those marketing products they will commit to purchasing Rhode Island grown products twice a month and then they'll let us know that by completing a survey at the end of the month.”
