April 22—Sycamore Community Schools, in Cincinnati, Ohio, have launched "wasteless lunches" in order to reduce waste and instill students with environmental knowledge.
The school plans these garbage-free lunch days four times per school year to help students understand responsible waste management, while also helping schools reduce their waste bill.
During these lunches, Sycamore’s Child Nutrition Services serves foods in school cafeterias that can be eaten without utensils, as well as fruits and vegetables that can be composted. Condiments are also served from bottles instead of individual packets and milk bottles and beverage cans are recycled as usual. In addition, each school provides students and families with information on how to pack a garbage-free lunch.
