Washington culinary team works to make tastier food for students

The team at Washington County Public Schools is working on creating tasty recipes that meet federal nutrition guidelines and can be made on a large scale while keeping expenses down.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md.—Washington County Public Schools’ students can expect to see dishes featuring fresh roasted chicken with an herb dry rub next school year.

That’s just one example of the changes that the school system’s Food and Nutrition Services Department has been working on to make the menu offerings, ordered to be healthier by the federal government, tastier.

A team led by the school system’s new manager of culinary development has been using the kitchen at the new administrative complex off Downsville Pike as a test kitchen to try out cooking techniques and recipes to make sure they taste good, meet federal nutrition guidelines and can be made on a large scale while keeping expenses down.
