Wash. school fundraises for local, fresh food

Donations fueled changes in cafeteria philosophy.

April 16—The smells of fresh baked bread and the sight of fresh produce at the salad bar have become the norm at Lopez School, in Wash.

The changes in the cafeteria started eight years ago when kids at Lopez School decided they wanted local beef and started fundraising for fresh and organic food. Since then donations have funded local grains, vegetables and meat. As donations have waned the foodservice department decided to hold its own fundraiser to get the money to continue the program.
