Livening up nutrition lessons

Kids cooled off by drinking their own personally made smoothies on a hot Friday last week.

Six-year-old Mya Hoffa pronounced a pineapple and mango smoothie as “good.”

“I like it because of the flavor,” she said.

Mya and other schoolage children at Busy Little Beavers Childcare made smoothies under the direction of Memie Christie, nutrition education adviser with Penn State Extension. Helping her was graduate student Amanda Gipson, of Drums.

“I only ever had a vanilla milkshake before,” Mya said.

Matthew Acor, 8, liked his banana smoothie. “I don’t think I have had one with bananas before,” he said.

He said his favorite day of Christie’s visits was Monday when they made trail mix.

The kids on Friday chose from among peach, pineapple, mango, blueberry and banana smoothies.

Among those learning to operate four types of blenders were Olivia Coffta, 8; Chloe Tyson, 6; Evelyn Coffta, 8; and Alexis Day, 6. The Coffta girls are twins.
