Students petition board for green cafeteria trays

A group of students from Erie Intermediate School asked their school board to switch from plastic foam lunch trays to biodegradable or reusable trays, noting it would save the district $9,500 annually.

Grant funds new cafeteria dedicated to sustainability and healthy eating

A Denver elementary school received grant money to help remodel its cafeteria to include a recycling and composting station, and to provide enhanced nutrition education.

Foodservice operators shared some tips during the National Restaurant Association show.

Michigan-based Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Hospital was recently presented the GreenHealth Partner for Change Award, for its program to eliminate Styrofoam containers and reduce the use of other disposables in cafeteria and dietary operations.

The Urban School Food Alliance describes the move as a major boost in sustainability.

Concerns that students living in the area are food insecure has prompted staff to plant a garden that will provide food to Livermore Elementary School’s pantry.

In making the switch, environmental advocates hope the trays will be healthier for the city's more than 1 million public school students and cut down on trash sent to landfills.

The Feed My School program serves as a learning tool, teaching food safety, pricing and packaging as well as helping grow the farm-to-school movement.

By recycling food waste from the school system into compost, Maple Shade Township’s program aims to lower the volume of food sent to landfills.

The Food Recovery Network at the University of Washington currently has three members and two restaurants—Panera Bread and Canlis—participating in food donations. Despite its small numbers, each week the FRN team rescues anywhere from 30 to 150 pounds of food.
