Universities bring local food to campuses

The University of Kansas has partnered with local farmers to bring fresh produce to campus, while Kansas State’s dining services purchases locally produced/processed meat, flour, fruits and vegetables.

Through the new Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program, awardees of the funds will work directly with school districts and food retailers to improve access to nutritious foods.

12 students are registered for Sacred-Heart’s five-week summer course that will teach them how to farm plants and feed animals, which will be used for the school cafeteria as well as farmers markets.

Our dishwasher raises pigs, so the majority of the food waste goes to feeding them. A lot of residents worry about wasting food, so we reassure them.
