Biden issues executive orders aimed at increasing SNAP and Pandemic EBT benefits

The orders seek to up federal food assistance for families struggling amid COVID-19.

The president-elect also announced a goal to get most K-8 students safely back to in-person class during his first 100 days in office.

The funding comes as school nutrition programs across the country continue to struggle with financial losses due to the pandemic.

The proposed rule would relax milk, grains and sodium requirements in child nutrition programs.

Single-use plastic straws would also be prohibited under the measure, which has not yet been signed into law by Gov. Murphy.

The School Nutrition Association is concerned that K-12 operators will face meal planning challenges due to the more stringent sodium and whole-grain rules, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will provide additional funding for food assistance programs such as the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program.

The comment period has been extended by 30 days and will now end on April 22.

The Pandemic EBT Act would apply to families with children attending schools that are closed for at least five consecutive days.
