The first Friday in May marks School Lunch Hero Day. School nutrition teams are being recognized on this day for their hard work keeping kids happy and fed. Here’s a preview of some of the celebrations happening throughout the country.

1. Hosting a competition

Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) is celebrating School Lunch Hero Day with a little friendly competition. For the past several weeks, students have been able to vote for their favorite school cafeteria team and the winning team will receive recognition by the district.

In addition, Dallas ISD has also provided coloring pages and thank you card templates for students to use to thank school nutrition staff.

2. Special swag

Chartwells K12 is recognizing its 16,000 chefs, dietitians and food service workers by giving them a special edition “school lunch heroes are the zest” t-shirt. In addition, individual Chartwells K12 schools are hosting their own celebrations to recognize their teams.

3. Video shoutouts

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is celebrating school lunch heroes throughout the state by creating a video series which features K-12 operators giving viewers a tour of their kitchen and introducing them to their team. The videos are being posted on social media for everyone to watch and enjoy.

4. Sending thank you cards

San Francisco Unified School District is celebrating its nutrition team by encouraging those in the district to send thank you cards to nutrition staff. It has also posted links to coloring sheets on its website for students who would like to color a picture for their favorite school lunch hero as well.
