South Carolina law bans use of collection agencies to recover school meal debt

School districts in the state will no longer be able to hire such agencies to recoup unpaid debts.

A new law in South Carolina will ban the use of debt collection agencies to address school meal debt.

Signed into law this month by Gov. Henry McMaster, H.3006 prohibits school districts from hiring collection agencies to recoup school meal fees unpaid by families.

The new law went into effect immediately.
