Connecticut expands free school meal access

The state is using $16 million to offer free meals to students at non-Community Eligibility Provision schools.

Also in this week’s K-12 legislative update: A new law in Maine will provide grant funding to foodservice programs, and lawmakers in Massachusetts pass a budget bill that would provide universal free meals.

The department awarded 103 grants, reaching an estimated 2,791 schools and more than 1.2 million students.

The bill would strengthen and expand the Pilot Project for the Procurement of Unprocessed Fruits and Vegetables.

The suggestions were outlined in a report released this month by the GAO, which analyzed the program over the span of several years.
