Utah’s Department of Agriculture and Food and the State Board of Education have launched a program to incentivize schools in the state to purchase more locally grown food, ABC 4 reports.
Under the Child Nutrition Program, the state will allot $250,000 to give to schools as part of their per-meal state reimbursement. Schools that spend a larger ratio on unprocessed food grown in Utah will receive a higher per-meal state reimbursement.
Officials hope that the program will improve the quality of school meals and help farmers in the state.
Utah is the 11th state to offer a locally grown incentive program for schools.
