University launches new delivery program

Consumers' embrace of mobile ordering and third-party delivery for restaurant meals is spreading to the noncommercial sector.

The University of Maryland has unveiled a program that uses students to deliver meals on campus via skateboard, bike or foot from such local hotspots as Chipotle and SweetGreen, according to DiamondbackOnline.

UMD students can also order from NuVegan and Blaze Pizza through the EnvoyNow app. Officials say more restaurant options will be added soon.

Last month, foodservice provider Aramark announced plans to offer mobile ordering, pickup and delivery at 25 colleges through Tapingo, a smartphone app.

As reported by FoodService Director, Chipotle also recently announced it would offer delivery to 40 college campuses this fall and more than 100 by spring through the same third-party app.
