University ends plate ban in dining halls

Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., is once again allowing standard plates and silverware in its dining halls after seven weeks of using disposable plates and utensils, The Cornell Daily Sun reports.

The ban was part of an effort to conserve water during a drought. Although the ban is over, the university still plans to reduce water consumption and has eliminated ice machines that use drinking water across campus. To further cut water use, dining staff have also been instructed to manually scrape food off dishes before washing them.
